Hello,

My name is Daria Lynn Cottingham. I’m excited to introduce myself as the new Communications & Community Engagement Coordinator at TJA!

I’m an award-winning media professional with a deep passion for storytelling and community engagement. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications from Prairie View A&M University in Texas and a master’s degree in Sports & Entertainment Journalism from the University of Southern California.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work across a range of media organizations, including Spotify, the Los Angeles Times, BuzzFeed, Essence, The Washington Post, and Harper’s Bazaar. My work has allowed me to explore storytelling from many angles — from reporting on the impact of HIV/AIDS in marginalized communities, to TV and film criticism, to brand strategy and creative direction across various communication channels (social media, newsletters, etc.).

I’m thrilled to bring that experience to TJA and support the organization’s communications and community engagement efforts. I look forward to connecting with many of you and helping amplify the important work happening across this community.

Best regards,
Daria Lynn Cottingham

2025 Impact Report

The TJA Impact Report illustrates our commitment to this community and the broader journalism industry.

The Trans Journalists Association dug in during a year of unprecedented attacks on trans journalists and communities. TJA trained newsrooms and journalists on coverage best practices, conducted media analyses, and developed the Trans News Initiative tool to track mainstream news coverage of trans communities.

By the numbers, we awarded $27,000 to journalists for professional development through our Level Up stipends. We received 727 donations from 217 donors. We supported 590 members from more than 20 countries. We were mentioned more than 26 times in the press.

See how we’ve shown up for our communities and the broader journalism industry over the last year.

Sustaining Your Efforts on FOIA Requests

Join us on Thursday, March. 26, at 12 p.m. PT / 3 p.m. ET for “Finding the FOIA Freeway: A Workshop for Filing Successful Requests.” The Trans Journalists Association will host an interactive workshop intended to guide journalists through the federal records request process, practice methods for finding stories in records, and streamline request tracking.

Register to engage with Adam Marshall (Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press) and other members of the Trans Journalists Association community. Bring your story ideas, request issues, and other questions for a practical bootcamp on FOIA.
