TJA welcomes editor Noia Karr to board of directors, announces new officers
The Trans Journalists Association is stepping into a new chapter, with four updates to our board of directors that uplift new leadership.
We're excited to announce that American Public Media's Noia Karr (she/her) has joined our board of directors in the role of treasurer, taking over for Minami Funakoshi (they/them) who will continue serving in an at-large capacity. Additionally, board member Tat Bellamy-Walker (he/they) has assumed the role of secretary while Graph Massara (he/him) has stepped down from the board, into a new role supporting the TJA Stylebook & Coverage Guide.
Karr was unanimously added to the the board after years of volunteering with TJA. She has dedicated her career to public-broadcast journalism, currently serving as a senior editor at American Public Media's Marketplace. Prior to that, she was a correspondent for various PBS shows, including News Hour; a senior cultural correspondent for NPR based in New York, where she covered the digitization of culture; the host of NPR's late-90s weekend cultural magazine, Anthem; and a general-assignment reporter for NPR based in Chicago. She taught radio at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism from 2004 to 2016.
"I'm excited to have Noia on board. She's been a longtime volunteer who has supported the organization behind-the-scenes for years, and she's a consistent voice for fair treatment of trans journalists and trans stories," said Kae Petrin (they/ze), TJA board president.
Massara completed his board service earlier this year, most recently serving as secretary. As part of the transition, he will take on a new role as Stylebook editor-at-large, continuing to guide the resource he helped build.
"Graph has been instrumental in building our Stylebook, which has become the definitive resource for covering trans communities under his stewardship," Petrin added. "I'm glad he'll continue to inform that work."
TJA especially thanks Funakoshi for their years of service to the organization in officer roles. We look forward to their continues contributions alongside fellow at-large board member Gina Chua.
