Coverage guidance: Reporting on the role of international politics in trans health care

As U.S. politicians restrict trans healthcare access, they often point to European policies as justification. However, our new reporting guide reveals that common claims about Europe's approach are misleading or false.

Our guide on the role of international politics in trans health care offers two key resources:

  1. Policy Context Brief: Explains how European trans healthcare actually works and why common talking points oversimplify the reality
  2. Reporting Best Practices: Provides specific questions journalists should ask when covering trans healthcare policy comparisons

Resource: Full reporting guide.

As with all TJA publications, this guidance was collaboratively written and researched. This report was written by Ozzy Llinas Goodman, researched by Goodman and Mizy Clifton, and edited by Kae Petrin. Several other TJA members consulted.

Save the Date: MuckRock x TJA FOIAthon

As you know, we've partnered with MuckRock to document the impact of anti-trans federal activities. Records we’ve recently requested include:

  • Communications from Columbia University and Brown University’s resolution agreements with the federal government, which include anti-trans housing and sports provisions
  • Documents regarding the U.S. Department of Defense’s expulsion of transgender service members, some of whom voluntarily identified themselves
  • Copies of over 20 subpoenas the U.S. Department of Justice sent to doctors and clinics who provided gender-affirming care to trans youth

As part of those efforts, we'll be co-hosting a FOIAthon with MuckRock Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 11:30a PT. Join us live as we answer your public records questions and file FOIAs together. Stay tuned for more details.
