Event recap: Holding the Line in San Francisco

On April 28, the TJA in collaboration with COYOTE Media Collective brought together four vital voices at the SF LGBT Center for Holding the Line: Local Power, Federal Pressure, and the Fight for Trans Rights. Following opening remarks from TJA President K Petrin and board member Graph Massara, the evening unfolded as a series of live interviews conducted by trans journalists.

The conversations were candid, incisive, and wide-ranging — covering everything from the on-the-ground impact of federal anti-trans policy on the most marginalized community members, to the legal tools San Francisco is deploying in response, to the limitations of institutional support and the role of art and culture in sustaining resistance. We're grateful to everyone who showed up, and to the journalists, guests, and community members who made the night what it was.

Training recap: Finding the FOIA freeway

In March, TJA hosted Adam Marshall of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press to talk about how to navigate filing federal records requests. Members can watch our video recap, and below is some advice for filing FOIA requests.

When working on stories involving FOIAs:

📝 Decide where the records you're going for fit into your story before requesting them.

This will help you determine your timeline. Requests often won't be filled by deadline, so can you start now with filing?

🐙 Think like an octopus.

What we mean by that: There are so many ways to get to records. Many federal actions occur through collaborations between agencies. You could submit a request to DHS, but what other agency was involved? You can also go to them.

🌳 Garden your requests.

Instead of making one request for one story, start making requests part of your weekly routine. Then, as you begin receiving records, tend to them to build a big picture of the agency or area you're reporting on. Maybe the record you just received isn't worth reporting on yet, but with time, it could ripen into a story.
