TJA takes the Bay
The night before the 20226 NLGJA convention kicked off in San Francisco, we brought our community together at the Commonwealth Club for a Journalism, Media & Community Mixer, cosponsored by URL Media and the San Francisco Chronicle.
On Sept. 9, trans journalists, TJA members, friends, and colleagues from across the industry filled a room overlooking the Bay Bridge. Some of us were catching up, some were meeting for the first time, and a lot of us were talking shop until the end of the night.

We plan to keep creating in-person spaces like this for our community, and the next one is big! Applications are now open for the 2027 Trans Journalists Summit, happening March 24 to 27 in Chicago. The summit will bring together about 100 trans and gender-expansive journalists for two days of workshops, networking, and conversation. TJA covers lodging and meals, and limited travel scholarships are available.

So you want to co-op the news
What does it look like to build a newsroom owned and governed by the people who work there? Join the TJA for a conversation with members of co-op newsrooms about the structure, workflow, and decision-making of organizations owned by their members on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at noon PST / 2 p.m. CST / 3 p.m. EST.
Soleil Ho of Coyote Media and Riley MacLeod of Aftermath will share their experiences and perspectives as we explore the possibilities and challenges of the co-op model for journalism.
Together, we'll ask: What does this future hold?
Opportunities Listing
- The Boston Globe is seeking an investigative editor to lead its Spotlight Team. This position is hybrid and based in Boston; candidates are encouraged to be in the area or are willing to relocate. The annual salary for this role is $120,000 - $160,000.
- MIT Technology Review is looking for an ambitious beat reporter to join its award-winning team. The role is remote and based in the U.S. with a salary ranging from $68,540 - $92,380.
- NPR is hiring a temporary (6-month) full-time video producer to help transition Planet Money into a new era of video. This is a hybrid role and will require in-office presence at the New York City location at least 3 days a week. This is a union-represented role covered by a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. Compensation is $56.26 per hour.
- The Better Life Lab is now accepting applications for the 2026–2027 round of multimedia reporting grants from U.S.-based applicants. They are looking for (and funding) stories on solutions to the care crisis—from child care innovations to investments in family, disability, elder, and end-of-life care. Stories will be commissioned on a rolling basis beginning in October 2026.
- The McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism provides experienced journalists with grants up to $15,000 and the editorial support needed to produce deeply reported enterprise and investigative stories with a strong economic, financial, or business angle. You don’t need to be a business reporter to apply. The deadline for Fall 2026 Fellowships is October 12.
